The village of Blauzac (pop. 782) is the perfect place to get away from the world. It is on a hilltop away from the main road and there’s no Internet access. There are no points of interest for tourists, which means you won’t hear anything but the church bells pealing in the morning and evening. The views onto the valley are stunning.
Uzès, the largest town in this area and the main shopping and eating-out location, is only ten minutes from Blauzac. The town has been the seat of the Duchy of Uzès for centuries. If France were a kingdom, it would be the job of the duc d’Uzès to cry out, “Le Roi est mort. Vive le Roi!“ at each state funeral, and defend the honor of the Queen Mother. Twenty-one ducs have been wounded or killed as hereditary Champion of France over the centuries (source: Wikipedia).
What I love most about Uzès is its main square, the Place Aux Herbes, which is surrounded by grand seigneurial houses. On the square are cafes and restaurants where visitors and locals hang out – it’s all very relaxed and quiet (at least in early July).
Restaurant Recommendations
Les Trois Salons: 18 rue du Docteur Blanchard – the restaurant is set in a grand house (dine in the garden in the summer) and serves modern French cuisine (i.e no heavy sauces).
Le Bec à Vin: 6, rue entre les Tours – delicious tapas on the Place Aux Herbes
Where to stay in Blauzac
La Maison: an ancient stone house converted into a B&B with swimming pool, large garden overlooking the valley, a library and friendly hosts.
