I can’t believe it’s been five years since we launched Weekendhotel.nl, the place to find the best hotels and B&Bs in the Netherlands and Belgium (with listings in France, Germany and elsewhere too).
Why did we start weekendhotel.nl? Because the large travel aggregation sites focus only on solving the hotels’ oversupply problem, in particular, the problem of chain hotels with lots of unfilled beds. The uglier and more unappealing the hotel (e.g. along a busy motorway), the more prominent it appears on these sites and the more beds it tries to move.
But what if you are looking for an atmospheric small hotel or B&B? Where do you go?
We started weekendhotel.nl to solve our problem which happens to be shared by a lot of people. Where do you go to find a non-chain hotel or a B&B that is beautifully decorated and offers personal service?
As for B&Bs, you won’t find the old style B&B on our site - you know, the ones where people have an extra room and stuff it with grandma’s old furniture. No, we wanted to feature B&Bs with an emphasis on good design. They’re popping up everywhere in Europe. Many of them are old historic buildings renovated by the owners, who offer personal service to their customers. As for hotels, we try to focus on smaller, independent hotels that offer a more personal approach than the chains.
