Now that the EU has announced it’s clamping down on roaming charges, the operators are threatening to increase rates. Well, they can try, especially this summer when free mobile phone service via Blyk will be launched in the UK.

This is another reason why I love citywide Wi-Fi. If most of us can dump our mobile phone subscriptions or at least ratchet them down to cheap prepaid subscriptions, and use Wi-Fi to call and do data transfers, we won’t care what the cellular operators do. As more Wi-Fi enabled mobile phones come on the market, we will be more than happy to oblige.
