I love Patrick Smith’s column “Ask the Pilot” in Salon. This time he has a list of the best, worst and weirdest airports. Among the best are Bangkok and Tel Aviv (efficient quiet security and free Wi-Fi). The worst are Dakar, New York JFK, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Cairo, London Heathrow, Chicago O’Hare, Houston and several others.

I agree with Patrick that Heathrow and Paris-CDG are nightmares. Every time I’ve connected through Paris-CDG I have missed my flight. Not mentioned on the list is Boston’s Logan Airport, a terrible place to be.

Well-designed beautiful airports with good food and free Wi-Fi, efficient and professional security personnel, are very important for people like me who travel a lot. There is nothing worse than an airport that is designed to frustrate the traveler and make her waste time. In my opinion, Amsterdam Schiphol airport and Copenhagen’s airport are among the best in the world. Unlike US airports, there’s very little screaming going on in the security line at European airports. Why is that? What’s the screaming all about? Scaring away ghosts?
