Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d’Epargne) won the first stage of the Tour de France 2008 in an exciting finish. Valverde came up from behind Kim Kirchen and Philippe Gilbert in the last seconds of the race. Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto), a favorite in this Tour, came in fourth.

No one can believe it but the Netherlands has just defeated France 4-1 and qualified for the quarterfinals. Goalkeeper Edwin van de Sar was brilliant.
